Compliment as a genre of speech etiquette in the practice of teaching Russian as a foreign language

Abstract
This article analyzes the genre of compliment in the vein of its utility in teaching Russian as a foreign language. We analyze the genre itself, its place in Russian speech etiquette, its functions and significance in the process of intercultural communication. While studying Russian as a foreign language, it’s crucial to give students the chance to know the specifics of Russian speech etiquette – namely, to inform them about the compliment genre in all its complexity – starting from the beginner level.
The article presents several specifics of studying compliment as a genre of speech by non-speakers. We offer different methods and know-hows to teach foreign students to use compliments in different communicative situations.
The article describes the ways to improve communicative competence and to form regional-knowing competence while studying compliment and offers the examples of compliments. We have come to the conclusion that studying compliments is a meaningful part of improving foreign students’ communicative competence. Knowing the specifics of this genre of Russian speech etiquette helps to overcome cultural and language barriers, is useful in students’ communicating and adapting to the Russian-speaking environment. This article might be useful to those who teach Russian as a foreign language.
