Abstract

The method of problem-based learning has long been the focus of attention of both educators and psychologists. The effectiveness of its application at different stages of learning and in different age groups is not questioned by any researchers. However, in the case of a foreign-language audience studying Russian, this method has been mainly used in the form of small problem-solving tasks, which is largely due to the lack of students’ communicative skills. In this article we share our experience of using problem-based learning in Russian as a foreign language classes based on the subject matter of natural sciences. A problem-solving situation is created through a direct experiment related to the physics topic “Gravity”, followed by a text that allows the situation to be resolved and the new vocabulary and grammar to be activated and reinforced. We conducted a study that demonstrated the effectiveness of using a problemsolving situation in classes of Russian as a foreign language.
