Methodology of studying complex sentences of a complicated structure with predicative units as blocks: a university classroom

Abstract

The article examines complex multi-component sentences with a component-block of predicative units from the structural and semantic point of view. The difficulties in studying this pattern are related to the lack of generally accepted terminology, which creates problems with studying them both in school and in university. Our analysis of a number of university textbooks and teaching aids on syntax suggests that the topic of identifying sentences of a complex type has not yet been properly explored. The purpose of this research is to identify and describe the most productive complex constructions in the Russian language, to propose recommendations for solving the issue of their classification, and to systematize the main features of complex sentences containing predicative unit blocks. We have established that the difficulties that arise, while studying this topic in a university classroom, are primarily due to the fact that the syntactic features of such sentences are not sufficiently taken into account, and complex sentences of minimal structure and complex structure are not distinguished. That problem leads to errors in their classification. At the same time, the final phase of studying this topic allows both reviewing previously studied material and familiarizing oneself with this material through the analysis of previous topics.
