Abstract
The objective of this study is to identify and describe the discursive mechanisms of evidential representation within Russian environmental texts. To achieve this goal, the following tasks were addressed: to identify the predominant types of evidentiality in the analysed discourse; to determine the key functions of evidential markers; and to describe the linguistic mechanisms of their implementation. Our analysis of the empirical data led to the following findings: 1) In Russian environmental discourse, evidentiality is primarily realized through lexical means, whereas grammatical methods of expressing this category are employed significantly less frequently; 2) Authors of environmental texts most commonly rely on indirect evidentiality, where the information source is not the author’s personal experience but a third-party report; 3) Evidentiality in Russian environmental texts not only indicates the source and accuracy of the data, but also serves as a strategic tool for masking unfavorable realities and mitigating the recipient’s negative reaction to the information provided.
