Abstract

This paper is a study at the junction of two current trends in modern linguistics, media linguistics, aimed at studying the linguistic features of mass media, and sociolinguistics, which studies the social nature of language and problems of the language preservation and development. In the context of the modern dynamic development of media corporations and global culture, of special importance is the relationship between the linguistic and social nature of language and their influence on the implementation of the functions of regional and minority languages. This paper deals with the functioning of the Tatar language in the regional media.

The aim of the research is to analyze the decreased use of regional languages in the media due to linguistic changes in the modern Tatar regional media.

The subject of the study is the current trends of the lexical units’ functioning in the texts of Tatar printed and electronic publications.

The paper identifies positive and negative aspects concerning the integration of new concepts, as well as the return to the old terminology, providing examples of lexical units that characterize modern texts of printed periodicals and highlighting the main areas of Tatar vocabulary replenishment.
