The word form “truth” in the zone of hybrid structures: Measuring the degrees of modalation

https://doi.org/10.26907/2074-0239-2021-63-1-142-147

Abstract

The relevance and novelty of the research is determined by the use of quantitative methods to analyze the facts of transitivity and syncretism in the parts-of-speech system and inter-speech сategories, which makes it possible to minimize the element of subjectivity in the assessment of grammatically controversial material.

The aim of the work is to identify the function peculiarities of such word forms as “truth” and “fact” in the context of asyndetic complex sentences, explicating the zone of hybridity on the modulation scale.

Modulation is understood as the process and result of the transposition of linguistic units of different categorical affiliation into the introductory-modal components of the statement. The results of the study are the qualitative and quantitative characteristics of hybrid structures, combining in different proportions the properties of nouns and introductory-modal units interacting during modulation. We used the methods of oppositional analysis and indexing to calculate the degrees of conformity between differential  features of the type “true” hybrid formations and the initial and final elements of the intercategory transposition. We have found that the “true” hybrid formation, functioning in the first incomplete predicative part of an asyndetic complex sentence, demonstrates 56 % of conformity (similarity and difference) to a nuclear noun (true) and 25 % conformity to a nuclear denominal introductory-modal word-conjunction (true).
