Abstract

The present article deals with the novel “A Compromise” by S. Dovlatov within the framework of the discourse linguistics problems. The research is focused on the compositional and stylistic specifics of the book where the technique of “editing” of several types of discourse in the fictional text field becomes dominant.

Using the method of discourse analysis, we achieved the set research goals: 1) to identify different types of discourse markers, which ensure a heterogeneous structure of the text in the novel “A Compromise” by S. Dovlatov; 2) to prove that the discourse heterogeneity in the work under study, firstly, is a text-forming dominant; secondly, it represents the stylistic originality of this work.

As a result of the research, we have found discourse markers of fictional and journalistic discourse, as well as the markers of Soviet ideological-political, everyday, ritual and anti-fascist types of discourse in the novel “A Compromise” by S. Dovlatov. In each of its twelve parts, the author’s narrative easily switches over from one of the mentioned types of discourse to the other, which ensures the discourse heterogeneity of the text. The technique of “editing” discourse of several types in a single artistic whole, on the one hand, testifies to the originality of the compositional organization of the text; on the other, it is a text-forming style dominant, which explicates S. Dovlatov’s individual authorial style.
