Alexander Artemiev’s novel “Salambi” in the mirror of Turkish criticism and literary studies

Abstract

The article examines the reception of Alexander Artemyev’s novel “Salambi” (1954–1955) in Turkish literary criticism. In 2019, the work, which is part of the golden treasury of Chuvash literature, was translated into Turkish by the folklorist and translator Bülent Bayram. The relevance of this study lies in the lack of research on the reception of this translation by Turkish critics and literary scholars. The analysis is based on the translator’s preface and interview, reviews by Ertuğrul Karakuş (2019), Dilara Dolkun (2021), and a research article by Ayşe Şener (2020). The study reveals the nature of the translator’s personal attitude towards the culture of the Chuvash people, and determines the role of the reviews in promoting the novel “Çuvaş Kızı Salambi” (“The Chuvash Girl Salambi”) in Turkey. The article proves that Turkish scholars consider this work to be an example of Chuvash realism with a strong social orientation and democratic focus. Turkish critics and literary scholars focus on the patriarchal ideal of the Chuvash woman in the context of Turkic literary traditions and the issue of folklore in Alexander Artemyev’s novel.
