Abstract
The article describes the structure and semantics of simple sentences with the meaning of increase and decrease.
The aim of the study is to identify the specifics of their component composition and the lexical content of the structural schemes in the simple sentences “who / what increases who / what” and “who / what decreases who / what”.
The theoretical importance of this paper lies in the fact that the linguistic material of the study and its differentiation can be useful in describing the syntactic system of the Russian language and the Russian linguistic world-image. The study is based on the works by Russian writers of the 19th–21st centuries. Special attention is paid to the classification of verbs forming the named schemes and names in the subjective and objective positions according to thematic groups. We have found that in the syntactic field (of changes), the structural scheme “who / what increases who / what” is located in the same tier with the scheme “who / what decreases who / what”, and some verbs of the first scheme have informal connotations, others belong to a higher level and third ones are marked “bookish style of speech”. The verbs of the second scheme to make up (for), to undermine, to weaken, to reduce belong to the sphere of colloquial speech, while lexemes to belittle, to lull are characteristic of bookish speech.
