Teaching students to extract language data on German compound nouns using the Sketch Engine corpus tool

Abstract

   Nowadays, we are in the age of searching for the development, processing and analysis of linguistic material, which underlines the importance of introducing new technologies in working with a foreign language. This article describes the didactic possibilities of using corpus technologies (based on the Sketch Engine corpus manager) to obtain language data during university foreign language classes. The task is to demonstrate that corpus technologies are applicable and illustrative for solving various linguistic and didactic tasks. We conducted an experiment on the introduction of corpus technologies in teaching foreign languages to students of a non-linguistic field of study at Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University. The corpus-based methodology was used to teach students how to extract language data about German compound nouns using the Sketch Engine Corpus. The article presents linguostatistical results obtained by using the Wordlist and CQL functions available in the shells of the used corpus manager. Based on the data obtained, the article studies and describes the possibilities and application of corpus technologies in teaching a foreign language, analyzes the advantages of the visibility of the presented results, and analyzes the effectiveness of using a corpus manager in working with compound nouns.
