Ornitonyms in A. Fet’s poetry

Abstract
Ornithonyms are nominations of birds. Ornithonyms are of interest for Russian linguistics, but they have not been sufficiently studied. This is also true for ornithonyms in literary texts, including the works of Russian poets.
The aim of the research is to study the role of ornithonyms in the poetry of A. Fet. We have used semiotic and linguistic statistical research methods.
The content analysis includes the study of A. Fet’s works in 1839–1892. We have used Dieter Lamping’s classification to determine the functions of ornithonyms. As a result, we have established that a significant proportion of the poet’s works contain ornithonyms and the list of birds’ names is very extensive. Most often, A. Fet uses ornithonyms in a figurative sense, but a third of ornithonyms function in their literal sense, which helps the poet to create a special poetic “landscape”. The analysis of the semantic characteristics of ornithonyms in A. Fet’s poetry shows that the poet successfully creates allegories, comparisons, metaphors and metonymy on their basis. In accordance with the classification of the proper names’ functions, we identify the following functions of ornithonyms in A. Fet’s poetry: identification, illusion, characterization, accentuation, perspective, aesthetics and mythologization.
