The peculiarities of phonetic interference in the speech of Russian-speaking residents in the USA

Abstract

   This study is devoted to the phonetic features characterizing the speech of Russian-speaking emigrants who live in the United States. Pragmatics of the research is based on fundamental works on phonetics and phonology by U. Weinreich and V. Yu. Rozentsweig. The research contains the types of phonetic interference, conditions for their implementation and the result of the language contact in every type of phonetic interference. The research is based on audio and video interviews with the Russian-speaking emigrants who have different experience of staying abroad. Phonetic interference, which reflects the speech of the Russian language speakers living abroad, is discussed in this article within phonetic norms. The facts, illustrating the existence of phonetic interference, are highlighted by analyzing the process of Russian and English phoneme articulation.

   The originality of the research includes topical practical data and the description of Russian-English accent, which is demonstrated as a phonetic background for Russian-speaking residents of the United States.

   In conclusion, the study describes the indicators of a Russian English accent.
