Code-switching in Russian, English and French communicative behavior

Abstract

   The study of communication has become paramount due to globalization, which is marked by cultural migration. Thus, verbal behaviour has become essential in communication studies focusing on code-switching that goes back to early times of the human development and reflects cross-cultural and cross language interactions. In spite of this fact, foreign linguists paid their special attention to the mentioned phenomenon only in the mid-1970^s. The investigations proved code-switching to be mostly subconscious and motivated by “momentary inclination” (J. M. Lipski, D. M. Lance, G. Valdes-Falles, A. Aguirre), which is illustrated by the way immigrants mix their native and local languages. Being both a linguistic and cultural phenomenon, code-switching (CS) has a high functional potential and contributes to the solution of a significant number of communicative tasks. The given research represents an attempt of the comparative and contrastive approach to the issue of code-switching in three global languages – Russian, English and French. As part of translation studies, CS can enhance major professional skills and needs further analysis.
